Ortlieb Bike Pannier Review

June 2, 2010

I cycle to work a couple of days per week and recently got caught out in the rain. Because I was ill-equipped, I spent the first 20 minutes of my working day in the bathrooms drying out my clothes under the hand air dryers. This experience inspired me to purchase some mud guards and a waterproof bag for attaching to my bike's panier.

I chose the Ortlieb Bike-Shopper bag since it offers the following features

  • Waterproof: I wannted a bag that I could stash my wet whether bike clothing in so that if it did rain, I would be able to put it on and put my small work bag in the waterproof bag.
  • Easy to attach and detach: I need to be able to attach and detach the bag from the panier as I will be doing it often.
  • Good Quality: I will be using the bag regularly and so I need it to be hard wearing and reliable. The Ortlieb Bike-Shopper meets this criteria.

The bag is titled the Bike-Shopper which is why there are no internal compartments except for a small pocket suitable for stowing such things as a wallet or keys. This suited my purposes, however, I imagine some people may be dissappointed by this.

The bag has adjustable carry straps which I unscrewed to prevent them from being in the way. I only carry the bag a few metres at either end of my journey so carrying it by its rigid handle is acceptable.

In summary, the Ortlieb Bike-Shopper is well made bag with a basic design. I would recommend its use for the simple task of assisting your transit in all sorts of weather.
